Trash and recycling routes in Cape Girardeau will remain the same during the Christmas and New Year's holidays. But there will not be any special pickups Wednesday or Jan. 1.

According to an email from the Public Works Department, extra holiday trash will be accepted on residents' normal trash pickup day beginning Monday and continuing through Jan. 10. A reasonable amount of bags and/or boxes may be placed next to the trash cart for disposal during this time.

The email said to dispose of Christmas trees, one option is for residents to drop off the trees at no cost at the designated location at Arena Park. Another option is to call and schedule an appointment to have their Christmas trees picked up. Available pickup dates are Jan. 8, 15 and 29. The fee will be $5 per tree, the email said.

In addition, city hall will observe Christmas Day on Wednesday and will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
