CAIRO, Ill. -- Cairo students won't be returning to school this week.
Members of the Cairo public schools board of directors met with representatives of the Cairo Association of Teachers Tuesday night, but no agreement was reached in the teachers' strike that has idled more than 1,000 students.
The special meeting Tuesday was in an effort to settle the 5-day-old strike here and resume school Wednesday.
The Cairo Pilots basketball team was scheduled to play in a tournament today but had to cancel. According to Illinois State High School Association rules, a school must be in session the day before a game.
