Area civic groups continue to keep the injured police officer Dan Niswonger and his family in mind.

Niswonger was injured in an April 2 motorcycle accident while working traffic control during a running event near the Show Me Center. Two weeks ago, after fighting infection in his injured right leg for weeks, doctors at a St. Louis hospital amputated the leg and part of his pelvis.

Niswonger has returned to Cape Girardeau, where he will undergo rehabilitative therapy at St. Francis Medical Center over the next several weeks.

On Friday, the Cape Girardeau Eagles Club is hosting a dart tournament to benefit the Niswonger family.

John Heuer, a member of the group, said that all proceeds from the $5 entry fees, raffles and beverages sold at the double-elimination tournament will go to the family.

The dart tournament is limited to 24 teams, blind draw, and Bud Light dart rules will apply. Trophies will be awarded to teams in first through fourth places.

Sign-up begins at 6:30 p.m.; the tournament will begin promptly at 7 p.m.
