Michael E. Overschmidt
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael E. Overschmidt, son of Michael and Susan Overschmidt of Glen Allen, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Overschmidt was cited for superior performance of duty while serving aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Hue City, homeported in Mayport, Fla. Overschmidt was singled out for a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal because of his initiative in making a significant contribution to the accomplishment of the command's mission.
With a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Overschmidt joins a select group of men and women, who have demonstrated their outstanding ability to excel in serving on the Navy-Marine Corps team. Whether assigned to ships, squadrons or shore commands around the world, men and women like Overschmidt are making a difference as they work to improve their knowledge and skill as part of the most highly technical naval force in history.
Overschmidt, a 1991 graduate of Woodland High School of Marble Hill, joined the Navy in June 1991.
Brett Turner
Navy Seaman Recruit Brett L. Turner, son of Robert L. and Dale E. Burrows of Jackson, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Turner completed a variety of training which included classroom study, practical hands-on instruction and an emphasis on physical fitness. In particular, Turner learned Naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival and a variety of safety skills required for working around ships and aircraft.
Turner is a 1994 graduate of Jackson High School.
