WICKLIFFE, Ky. Westvaco Corporation, a major manufacturer of paper, packaging and chemical products, recently held a joint meeting with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to announce and kick off the establishment of the Westvaco Wildlife Management Area.
The refuge area includes approximately 2,000 acre in Carlisle and Hickman County, and will be expanded to include several thousand acres of Westvaco land.
"This wildlife management area is very important to Kentucky, surrounding states, local communities and sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts nationwide," said Westvaco John A. Luke, during the special ceremony, held at Columbus-BElmont State park Monday. "It is also important to Westvaco, our shareholders and our employees. We fully expect this pioneering project to be one of our most successful. We are pleased to be the owner and enabling partner in this wildlife program in WEstern Kentucky."
Westvaco headquartered in New YOrk, has a paper mill near Wickliffe. the company has a long tradition of environmental and natural resource contributions. It owns and manages over a million acres of forest land, with about 68,000 acres in West Kentucky. Westvaco currently permits public hunting on about 35,000 acres in West Kentucky.
