JACKSON -- Cape Girardeau County Clerk Rodney Miller announced his office will mail out some 40,000 new voter identification cards over the next few days to area residents.
County clerks are required by law to provide voters with new registration cards every two years, Miller said.
The cards identify the voters' precincts and wards, congressional districts, state representative districts, commissioner districts and other special districts in which voters reside.
The new cards will be yellow and red to make them easier to identify. Voters should destroy their old cards and when they receive replacements. Voter identification cards are required at polling places.
The U.S. Postal Service will not forward cards to new addresses. Cards for individuals who have moved and not notified the County Clerk's office of their new address will be returned to the clerk's office in Jackson. The County Clerk's office will then notify those individuals that they need to change their addresses for voter registration.
Registered voters who do not receive new identification cards or notification to update their address by May 1 should contact the County Clerk's office at 243-3547 or 335-9060.
