SIKESTON, Mo. — Since breaking ground in late August, local residents have anticipated the opening of the new Malco Cinema in Sikeston. The wait is nearly over.
Located in Cotton Ridge, a land development area in Sikeston off U.S. 60, west of Wal-Mart near Hennings Drive and Lawrence Street, work continues on the new theater.
According to Mike Bohannon of Cotton Ridge Development, the target date to open the theater is June 3.
“We should be finished in about a week,” said Dustan Crowe of Linkous Construction. “Then people from Malco will come in and lay down the carpet and put in the seats and things.”
Crowe said the new cinema is 25,063 square feet on the bottom floor and 3,128 square feet above where the projectors are placed.
There will be eight theaters with theater 1 serving as the biggest, seating 268. Theaters 2, 3 and 4 are a little smaller, seating 178, 146 and 162 respectively.
Theaters 5, 6 and 7 are all the same size and will each seat 93.
Just outside theater 8, which will seat 49, will be a small party room where events such as birthday parties can be held. There also will be an arcade just outside the party room.
The lobby will feature a ticket booth and concession area.
The cost to build and equip the theater is about $5 million.
