TROY, Mo. (AP) -- A captain in the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department is taking over the top spot.

The eastern Missouri county's commission today chose 51-year-old Kent Hanshew as the new sheriff. He replaces Dan Torres, who resigned Wednesday to take a job with a private company.

Hanshew has been with the department since 1999, and worked there full-time since 2002.

Torres was first elected in 2000 and was serving his second term. He says the new job offers better pay and benefits.
