CAIRO, Ill. -- Four new Cairo High School Board of Education members were elected here Tuesday.
Headlining the new board were Gary Walston and Kenneth Jones, who led the eight-person field with more than 800 votes each.
Walston and Jones were one-two on the list, with 878 and 841 votes respectively. Others elected included Joseph Holder, with 793 votes, and Charles E. Althoff, with 656 votes.
Losers included Clarence Mallory, who was president of the board, with 499 votes, and incumbent Lynn S. Byrd, with 551 votes. Other candidates included Sandra Denson, with 343 votes, and Devon M. Hinds with 112.
One of the longest list of candidates was for the Anna-Jonesboro High School Board of Education, where nine candidates vied for four positions. Jimmy Keller led the field, with a total 1,021 votes. He was followed by incumbent Kenneth E. Kapper, with 845 votes. Rounding the four-person list of winners were Bob Dover, with 682 votes, and Ronnie Mays, with 633.
Bill Jackson, one of the incumbent candidates, failed in his bid to return to the board, gathering 558 votes. Other candidates and their totals were Stephen Westbrooks, 603, Larry M. Birkhead, 279, Robert Weilmunster, 510, and Debra Davis Jackson, 434.
Challenger Robert A. Spaulding led the Meridian High School balloting with 679 votes. Incumbents Jerry D. Thurston and Thomas L. Nixon were also winners, with 558 and 517 votes respectively. Incumbent Linda Sue Porter Maborn lost her bid for returning to the board, with 307 votes.
Balloting was close in the Shawnee High School board election, with only 16 votes separating the top from the bottom. New candidate Rollie B. Matlock had the high total of 120. Other unofficial winners included incumbents Kenneth Mezo, 118, Richard Schaefer, 114, and Mrs. J.T. Hill, 112. Incumbent Mitchel McLane collected 104.
Three incumbents were winners in the Egyptian High School board elections. Lamar Houston Jr. collected 244 votes to lead the balloting. Other winners were incumbents Thomas L. Smothers, 224, and David Tucker, 200. The other candidate was JoAnn Turner, with 182. Lowell Mendenhall was elected to serve an unexpired two-year term, collecting 213 votes.
