New, fatter AT&T phone books -- 62,500 of them -- are on their way to Southeast Missouri residents by the end of the next week, with a sleek new cover that features Cape Girardeau's new federal building and the university's Redhawks logo.

Marsha Haskell, AT&T's vice president of external affairs, said all of the phone books will be delivered by 60 people in a 10-day time period that is expected to be finished Dec. 15.

Haskell was especially proud of the federal building that graces the cover. The federal courthouse building in Cape Girardeau is expected to be completed in 2007.

"It's a beautiful building and an asset to our community," she said. "It's a wonderful representative for our community."

The December 2006 phone book also offers more than phone numbers, she said, including maps, ZIP codes, community events and a Southeast Missouri State University sports schedule. There is also a secondary distribution of about 30,500, she said, for people and businesses that move into the area during the next year.

The book is also bigger. The white pages -- with its list of residential listings -- is the same at 242 pages, but the yellow pages, the book's business listings, is nine pages longer at 244 pages.

"That definitely shows growth for our business community," Haskell said.

Most of the phone books will be delivered to people's doorsteps, Haskell said, but she said they are also available at the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, Cingular Wireless locations on Mount Auburn and North Kingshighway and many local banks -- Wood & Huston, Commerce Bank, Bank of America in Cape Girardeau and Jackson, and Union Planters.

Phone books are also available at Young's Thriftway Drug in Jackson, John's Pharmacy in Cape Girardeau and at the Show Me Center.
