A new clinic on Broadway in Cape Girardeau has familiar faces at the helm: two former employees of River City Health Clinic, which closed in January.

Sheila Armbruster, family nurse practitioner, said she was at River City Health Clinic about two and a half years before the facility closed in January.

We were told on a Friday we were closing that afternoon, Armbruster said.

That was Jan. 12, she said.

Over the weekend, she said, she made some calls and by Monday, was setting up at 714 Broadway.

Within a week, we were open, she said, adding there were 19 patients the first day Broadway Family Clinic was open.

The clinics focus is primary family care, Armbruster said, though they do offer more specialized services.

We do hepatitis C treatments, Armbruster said, and some of the clinics patients receive hormone replacement therapy.

Armbruster, who has been a nurse for 32 years, said shes interested in learning more about ways to better treat patients. When reached by phone Thursday, she said she was on her way to a pain-management class with her husband, also a licensed medical professional.

A lot of pain-management clinics are sending patients back to primary care for actual pain management, Armbruster said, so I definitely want to learn more about that.

Armbruster said she also used to have a business in Cape Girardeau that provided cosmetic treatments, including fillers and permanent makeup. She said its a future possibility that some of those services would be offered, too.

Wanda Horn has been a psychiatric nurse practitioner since 2009, when she started at River City Health Clinic, and has been a registered nurse for 20 years.

Horn said she works with patients age 18 and older who need psychiatric treatment, and after an initial evaluation, she talks with the patient about a recommended course of treatment.

She knows what shes doing, Armbruster said of Horn.

Armbruster said the experience of setting the clinic up so far has been a positive one, but busy.

Getting the system in place has been the most difficult thing, she said, between meeting regulations, filing paperwork and building her client base. Well get there eventually.
