KIRKWOOD, Mo. (AP) -- Kirkwood's new mayor takes the oath of office in an emotional ceremony.

Art McDonnell was sworn in Thursday night. He replaces Mike Swoboda, the outgoing mayor who survived being shot in the head in a rampage in February that killed two council members, two police officers and the city's director of public works.

The gunman, Charles "Cookie" Thornton, was then shot to death by police.

Swoboda served two terms and could not seek a third due to term limits. He attended the ceremony, during which the shooting victims were fondly remembered. McDonnell says he thinks of the rampage every day.

McDonnell was the only candidate on the ballot in an election earlier this month. He defeated three write-in candidates.
