A first order of business for a new national organization of general-education administrators that was launched last fall is to consider development of a proposal setting national guidelines for general education programs.
The organization, the Council of Administrators for General and Liberal Studies, was formed during a national meeting in San Antonio, Texas, of the Association for General and Liberal Studies. At that time, the council ratified a constitution and elected officers.
Dr. John Hinni, dean of the School of University Studies at Southeast Missouri State University, was elected president of the council's board.
Hinni, who also has been elected to the Executive Board of the Association for General and Liberal Studies, said the council was established because general-education administrators believe general-education issues need centralization.
"It developed because many general-education program administrators believe we need a way to communicate with one another," Hinni said. "It's a dream of many years."
Hinni said he hopes to charter the council in Missouri and establish a national center for the council in the School of University Studies at Southeast.
