Doug Groesbeck, AmerenUE district manager, said the new substation will replace one near the Cape Girardeau City Hall, a few blocks to the east. The existing substation is being relocated to make room for a new federal courthouse at the corner of Independence and Frederick.

The federal government is paying the $1 million cost of relocating the substation. Equipment already has been moved to the new fenced-in site.
