JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Democrat Tom Neumeyer had about $5,300 more cash on hand than Republican Jason Crowell in their race for the open 158th District seat in the Missouri House of Representatives, according to their latest campaign finance disclosure reports.
Neumeyer, a Cape Girardeau city councilman, reported $6,666.19 on hand while Crowell, a local attorney, had $1,307. However, Crowell has both raised and spent more in his effort to fill the seat being vacated by Republican state Rep. Mary Kasten. The district represents most of the city.
The finance figures come from reports filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission and covers the period of July 28 through Sept. 2.
As of Sept. 2, Crowell had spent $47,239.04 while raising $48,546.33. His campaign receipts include $18,000 in outstanding debt.
The bulk of Crowell's spending came prior to the Aug. 8 Republican primary in which he easily defeated two opponents, City Councilman Jay Purcell and businessman Stan Wicks. Crowell captured 63 percent of the vote to claim the GOP spot on the Nov. 7 ballot.
Neumeyer, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary, had taken in $9,024.06 while spending $2,316.81. His campaign had no debt.
During the latest reporting period, Crowell raised $9,925, including an $8,000 personal loan, and spent $9,765.94. Four donors gave the maximum allowed amount of $275 -- Alliance Blue Cross Blue Shield of St. Louis, Brandi Schumacher of Cape Girardeau, Missouri Progress Committee of Jefferson City and Jack Oliver of Cape Girardeau.
Of the $1,925 in individual donations, 56 percent of the money came from sources outside the 158th District.
Neumeyer took in $5,031 in the latest reporting period while spending $1,196.48. His receipts included $2,249 in itemized donations and $2,782 in small donations and anonymous contributions made at fund-raising events.
Five donors gave the maximum -- the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Educational Committee of Washington, D.C., Gordon Neumeyer of Cape Girardeau, the Cape Girardeau County Democratic Central Committee, the Byrd Township Democrats and the Carpenter's District Council of Greater St. Louis. Sources outside of the 158th District accounted for 25 percent of Neumeyer's itemized donations.
