Nell Holcomb School District superintendent David Fuemmeler was named Superintendent of the Year by the Missouri K-8 Schools Association.

It's the first time that an area K-8 school superintendent has received the award, he said.

The association represents the 75 school districts in the state that serve students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Fuemmeler, who is retiring as superintendent at the end of this school year, received the award at the association's ninth annual convention in Branson, Mo., earlier this month.

The Nell Holcomb superintendent served as president of the association for the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 school years.

The award is presented annually to recognize a superintendent's accomplishments in the field of education.

"I thought it was a nice honor to receive," said Fuemmeler.

He has served as superintendent of the Nell Holcomb School District in Cape Girardeau County for the past 15 years. The school has about 340 students.

The award underscores the district's success, said Fuemmeler. "It helps to reinforce the fact that the Nell Holcomb district is a quality district," he said.
