Balloons, barbequed meats and a table full of picnic goodies set the festive mood, but it was the words of thanks from residents that touched Cape Girardeau police officers who joined neighbors for a cookout Tuesday evening in David Bangert's yard.

"These guys have done a great job," Bangert said. "People can walk on the streets now and aren't afraid to come out of their homes like they used to be."

The cookout temporarily took the place of a regularly scheduled Neighborhood Watch meeting. About 50 people, including residents, police and city leaders, attended.

Chief Steve Strong said the event came about thanks to improved relationships between police and southside residents.

"It's kind of an unusual set of circumstances," he said between bites of a hamburger. "We're in the 'complaint' business, because what we usually hear are complaints. But when people talk about the benefits of community policing, this is a good example of what it's all about."

Resident Ron Acord said it was hard to put into words his gratitude to the police and city leaders for taking to heart the concerns of the Watch group.

"There's not enough that can be said about the cooperation we've had from the mayor, council and police on this project," he said.

The group formed in 2000, but police believe it's stronger today than it ever was, Sgt. Rick Schmidt said.

"Historically, they usually form to address a specific problem, and when the problem goes away the group tends to become dormant -- but this one didn't," he said. "They're not supposed to be as strong or last as long as this one has."

Anyone interested in joining the Neighborhood Watch group can call Schmidt at the Cape Girardeau Police Department at 335-6621, ext. 1129.
