About 20 students are expected to enroll in the Summer Preparatory Academy being offered for the second year this summer at Southeast Missouri State University.

The academy allows prospective university freshmen who have been denied admission to Southeast to correct academic deficiencies in order to be admitted for the fall 1994 semester.

Fred Snider, assistant vice president for enrollment development and interim registrar, said nine students are currently enrolled and another nine are expected.

Students who fail to meet Southeast's admission requirements of a 2.0 grade point average, an 18 American College Test (ACT) score and completion of the core curriculum are eligible for the academy.

The academy will run concurrently with Southeast's eight-week summer session, June 14 to Aug. 5. Classes will be held Monday through Friday.

"Our goal is to help those people whose test score would indicate they may have some difficulty at the university level," Snider said.

The academy drew 22 participants for its first session, held last summer.

Students participating in the academy will be required to enroll in a one-credit-hour course, "University Preparation." This course will focus on study and note-taking skills, Snider said. Depending on their ACT sub-test scores, academy students also will be required to enroll in developmental English and math courses, each worth three credit hours. Students are required to earn at least a "C" in each of these courses.

The academy, which is being coordinated by the Campus Assistance Center, also will provide participants with tutoring and an introduction for successful university living.

At the end of the eight-week academy, participating students will be asked to retake the ACT. Based on their new ACT score and their overall summer performance, academy staff will determine whether to recommend the students be admitted to Southeast for the fall semester, Snider said.

Students who again are denied admission to Southeast will be encouraged to enroll in classes at the Bootheel Education Center in Malden or at a community college, Snider said.

Persons interested in enrolling in the academy should contact Southeast's admissions office at (314) 651-2590.
