WAPPAPELLO -- The Johnson Tract Nature Trail, in the Johnson Natural Area at Wappapello Lake, has been designated a National Recreation Trail, part of the National Trails System, by the Department of the Interior.

"We're planning a ceremony to dedicate the new national trail in early spring of 1991," said Michael McClendon, of U.S. Army Corps of engineers. The trail is located on public land, administered by the Corps of Engineers, about 20 miles north of Wappapello Dam, on Highway D.

The trail was designated a national trail because of the variety of outdoor recreation uses it offers.

The five-mile backpacking trail winds through 1,100 acres of mature oak/hickory forest, and provides access for backpacking, primitive camping, wildlife observation, photography and just plain hiking.
