Several national speakers will highlight the inauguration of Dr. Dale Nitzschke as Southeast Missouri State University's 16th president.
Gov. Mel Carnahan will be on hand to deliver greetings at the inauguration ceremony on April 10, university officials said Wednesday.
Secretary of State Bekki Cook and Treasurer Bob Holden also are scheduled to attend, along with a number of state lawmakers.
The university is celebrating the inauguration with a week of activities.
Jim Biundo is assistant to the president at Southeast and helped organize the events.
He said the inauguration will showcase the university.
The celebration begins Friday with a speech by former U.S. senator Paul Simon of Illinois. Simon will speak at 7 p.m. in Dempster Hall's Glenn Auditorium.
The annual Low Lecture on Wednesday will feature four former Southeast officials, who will hold a panel discussion at 7 p.m. in Glenn Auditorium.
Panelists will be Kala Stroup, Missouri commissioner of higher education; Bill Stacy, president of California State University-San Marcos; David Strand, president of Illinois State University, and Les Cochran, president of Youngstown State University.
On inauguration day, former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern and conservative writer and commentator William Buckley will debate in Academic Hall Auditorium.
Dr. Maya Angelou, a distinguished poet, author, actress and playwright will speak at 2 p.m. at the inauguration ceremony in the Show Me Center.
Most of the events, including the inauguration itself, are open to the public.
There is no admission charge, but tickets are required to attend the inauguration ceremony, university officials said.
Free tickets may be picked up between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Show Me Center box office. Persons wanting tickets must provide photo identification. Tickets will be limited to two per person.
Faculty, staff and students also may pick up tickets this week.
Inauguration week will end April 12 with a performance by comedian Bill Cosby. The university is selling tickets for that event, which begins at 8 p.m. in the Show Me Center.

"The Foundations of Southeast Missouri Archaeology: Thomas Beckwith and Other Pioneers in the Field," Crisp Hall, Lynn Dempster Auditorium. The lecture will be given by Stephen Williams, Peabody Professor of North American Archaeology, emeritus.
Noon to 1:15 p.m. "The Global Rhythm Tour," University Center Ballroom, Arthur Hull, a nationally known community drum circle facilitator will lead this hands-on drumming experience for the Class of 2000 using rhythms drawn form Africa, the Caribbean and around the world.
