The first of three juried exhibitions sponsored each year by the Southeast Missouri Council on the Arts is on display now at Gallery 100.

"Midwest Minis" is an exhibit of two and three dimensional artwork no larger than 14 inches in size. Artists from all over the United States have submitted work for review by the judge for Midwest Minis, Kim Mosley, professor of art at St. Louis Community College, Florissant Valley.

Cash prizes, gift certificates and ribbons are awarded for first, second and third place and honorable mention.

Local artists displaying their work in the exhibit are James V. Parker and Pamela Boyd of Cape Girardeau, Jean Joy and Fran Henderson of Perryville and Lee Spalt of Cobden, Ill.

Prize winners are Victoria Pousette-Dart of Winchester, Mass.; Sally Bailey of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Marcia Stewart of Ft. Myers, Fla.; Irwin Greenberg of New York City; Kenneth McCall of Urbana, Ill.; and Katherine McCabe of Englewood, N.J.

Mosley said he selected winners whose artwork revealed something about themselves. He said the winning works "revealed to me more of the personality of the artist and introduced me to enjoyable experiences which were new to me."

Juried shows such as the Midwest Minis are sponsored by Southeast Missouri Council on the Arts to offer beginning artists an opportunity to compete with other artists for an exhibition opportunity.

"Juried shows are a part of the professional development process for beginning artists," said Beverly Strohmeyer, executive director of the arts council. "They provide professional criticism by the jurors and exhibition opportunities to the artists, and give the public a look at regional and contemporary artwork."

The three shows sponsored annually by the arts council are Midwest Minis; Photo 92, a national juried exhibition for works in any photographic process, and Art Experience, a national, two-dimensional fine art competition.

Gallery 100 is located in the Boatmen's Bank building at 100 Broadway, and is open to the public from 1-4 p.m. weekdays. Midwest Minis will be on display through Feb. 28.
