WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump may be trying for a reset in the West Wing, but he is making clear he is not changing his Twitter habit. On Twitter on Tuesday, Trump said: "Only the Fake News Media and Trump enemies want me to stop using Social Media (110 million people). Only way for me to get the truth out!" The tweet came one day after retired general John Kelly took over as Trump's chief of staff. Tapped to bring order to the West Wing, Kelly made his presence known Monday, ousting newly appointed communications director Anthony Scaramucci and revising the command structure so all senior staffers report to him. Less clear is how much control Kelly will have over Trump's predilection for sowing conflict and making off-the-cuff comments on social media.
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he doesn't believe a city agency's claims surrounding wastewater discharges that turned the water near the base of Niagara Falls black at the height of a busy tourist weekend. A day after directing state regulators to investigate, the Democrat said Tuesday he believes there will be a criminal investigation because of the potential seriousness of the situation. He said he doesn't believe the Niagara Falls Water Board's statement the discharge from the local wastewater-treatment plant was within permitted limits. Cuomo said Monday the expulsion of foul-smelling, black water into the Niagara River on Saturday may have violated state water-quality standards. The city's water board said it was part of routine maintenance.
INDIANAPOLIS -- A man charged Tuesday in the fatal shooting of a police officer in Indianapolis was dangling upside down in his overturned car after a crash when he became agitated as the officer tried to help him and opened fire, striking the officer 11 times, according to court documents. Jason D. Brown, 28, was charged Tuesday with one count of murder in the July 27 slaying of Southport police Lt. Aaron Allan. He also faces a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. Authorities haven't disclosed a motive in the killing. But a probable-cause affidavit filed with the charges states other officers and witnesses said Allan approached the overturned car, stuck his head inside and told Brown "to be calm and that help was on the way." The Indianapolis man became "hysterical," it states, before grabbing a handgun and opening fire, shooting Allan 11 times, including in the heart.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A vacationing federal agent from Kansas City accidentally shot himself in the foot while "unslinging a shoulder bag" inside Orlando International Airport. News outlets report the shooting happened about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday in the passenger lobby. An Orlando police statement said the bag knocked his weapon from its holster. The agent "tried to catch the firearm and inadvertently pulled the trigger." The Orlando Sentinel reported the agent is an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.
