George H.W. Bush breaks bone in neck

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine -- Former President George H.W. Bush fell at his home in Kennebunkport and broke a bone in his neck. Spokesman Jim McGrath says the 91-year-old Bush is in stable condition and is doing "fine" after Wednesday's fall. He said in a tweet the 41st president will be in a neck brace. Bush was taken to a hospital in nearby Portland, Maine, where he is "very stable," McGrath said to CNN. Bush was never disoriented, he said. "We are not expecting a long stay" in the hospital, McGrath told the network.

Trump fortune set at $10 billion

WASHINGTON -- Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump filed financial documents with federal campaign regulators Wednesday and set his personal fortune at more than $10 billion, with an annual income of more than $362 million. Members of his staff had said Trump would release the financial documents themselves, but they issued only a news release announcing the filing and included a few financial details. It provided little information about how he calculated his net worth. The $10 billion figure -- up nearly 15 percent since the previous year, by Trump's calculation -- would make him the wealthiest person to run for president, far surpassing previous magnates such as Ross Perot, business heirs such as Steve Forbes or private-equity investors such as Mitt Romney.

Budget cuts lead to poor service at IRS

WASHINGTON -- An IRS watchdog says the tax agency provided poor customer service during this year's tax filing season as taxpayers struggled with identity theft and President Barack Obama's health law. A report issued Wednesday by the National Taxpayer Advocate says the IRS has been hampered by budget cuts. Congress has cut the agency's budget by $1.2 billion since 2010. The report says the IRS blocked nearly 1.6 million suspicious tax refunds this year because of concerns about identity theft. About a third turned out to be legitimate, but for long stretches during tax season, fewer than 10 percent of callers could get through to an IRS help line.

Jurors get theater shooting case

CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- Jurors began deliberating Wednesday in the trial of Colorado theater shooter James Holmes. The panel of nine women and three men started deliberating over whether Holmes was legally insane when he killed 12 people during a crowded midnight movie premiere three years ago. Holmes' attorneys say he was in the grips of a psychotic breakdown and couldn't tell right from wrong. Prosecutors say Holmes was legally sane when he planned the attack. If jurors find Holmes was legally insane, he'll be committed to a state mental hospital indefinitely. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Jurors will resume their deliberations today.
