A man who was shot multiple times Wednesday night in Cape Girardeau died from his wounds at a hospital in the overnight hours Thursday morning.
The Bollinger County/Cape Girardeau County Major Case Squad identified the shooting victim as Willie Brown, 31, of Cape Girardeau.
Brown was shot in the 300 block of South Hanover Street and died from his injuries about 3:30 a.m. Thursday at Saint Francis Medical Center, according to Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton.
Brown was conscious as he was loaded into the ambulance.
Witnesses at the scene, who asked not to be named, said they thought Brown was shot in the lower torso and upper leg area three to four times. Brown’s friend was with him that night and said Brown went south on Hanover Street before he was shot.
Brown, who went by “Huck G,” has one child, the friend said.
Multiple residents in the area said they heard about six shots fired Wednesday night. Although police concentrated the investigation in the area of 319 S. Hanover St., one resident said Brown was shot near a house a few residences north.
The major case squad was activated Thursday morning to investigate the homicide. Police have not provided any information about possible suspects.
This was the fourth Cape Girardeau homicide of 2016.
It was the third shooting with injuries on South Hanover Street since June 2015. On June 29, 2015, Paige Smith was shot in the head while sitting on a porch at 401 S. Hanover St. On July 28, 2015, a man was shot in the back at 201 S. Hanover St.
On July 3, drivers in two cars exchanged gunshots on Hanover, but no one was hurt.
