JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Incumbent state Rep. Pat Naeger had raised nearly four times more money than challenger John Wibbenmeyer, campaign finance disclosure reports show.
Naeger, a Perryville, Mo., Republican, had raised $41,398.42 in his bid for a fourth term in the General Assembly from the 155th District, which covers Perry and Ste. Genevieve counties. It would be the last term Naeger is allowed under term limits.
Wibbenmeyer, a Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Democrat had garnered $11,216.33 so far in his first bid for elective office. Wibbenmeyer retired in May from Ste. Genevieve High School, where he was band director and taught computer courses.
The reports, filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission, cover campaign activity for the period of July 28 to Sept. 2.
Naeger had spent $25,003.39, close to five times more than Wibbenmeyer, who listed expenditures of $5,554.08.
However, Wibbenmeyer trailed more closely in term of cash on hand.
Wibbenmeyer reported $6,181.54 in the bank while Naeger had $10,301.06.
Wibbenmeyer said he isn't planning on launching any major fund-raising activities.
"It is more of a ground-based operation," Wibbenmeyer said.
Naeger, who was first elected in 1996 and currently holds the House leadership post of minority caucus secretary, had 91 itemized donations totaling $9,850 for the latest reporting period.
Eight donors gave Naeger the House campaign maximum of $275 per election: The Missouri Association of Insurance Agents of Jefferson City, the Perry County Nursing Home of Perryville, Station Casino operations in both Kansas City, Mo., and St. Charles, Mo., Mississippi Lime Co. of Ste. Genevieve, the Tilley Eye Center in Perryville, and tobacco companies Brown and Williamson of Louisville, Ky., and Lorillard of Greensboro, N.C.
Close to two-thirds of Naeger's donations -- 60 in all -- were for $100 or less.
Contributions to Naeger from sources outside of the 155th District totaled $3,565, accounting for approximately 36 percent of what he had raised.
Wibbenmeyer had just four itemized donations, which totaled $1,050. Two of those contributors -- the campaign of state Rep. Chris Liese, D-Maryland Heights, and the Ste. Genevieve County Democratic Party -- gave Wibbenmeyer the maximum. He took in another $375 in non-itemized contributions.
