The president of the Cape Girardeau Area NAACP and three executive board members attended the organization's state conference Sept. 27-28 in Hannibal.
Michael Sterling, president of the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said the theme of this year's conference was "Rising to Justice and Equality.
Also attending from Cape Girardeau were Freddie Ford and Clyde Benson, co-chairmen of the local Legal Redress Committee, and Linda Michael, Education Committee Chairman.
The members attended workshops on topics including housing, education, bias crime and criminal justice, employment, membership, and fund raising. The conference culminated with a Freedom Fund Banquet. Frances Hooks, wife of NAACP Executive Director Benjamin Hooks, the guest speaker.
