The Southeast Missouri Music Academy, a non-profit organization under the auspices of Southeast Missouri State University's department of music, invites students in grades one through 12 to enroll for instructions in band and orchestral instruments, piano, organ, harp and voice.
The academy is dedicated to stimulating a lifelong appreciation of music, said Becky Fulgham, academy director. The academy, which guides the development of basic musical and performing skills, is a member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts.
The instruction includes 30-minute private lessons along with group classes, which can be taken in a one- or two-semester format. The one-semester session runs from Aug. 28 to Dec. 15, and the two-semester session runs from Aug. 28 to May 10. Registration deadline is Aug. 18.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of performance activities, including recitals and masterclasses. Students may also participate in the Missouri Music Teachers Association student auditions, Missouri High School Activities Association festivals, the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival and various other competitions.
The academy also will offer adult piano classes and special classes for young children.
The adult piano class is designed for beginners and those wishing to brush up on skills learned as a child. Classes will meet on Tuesday evenings and will run from Oct. 3 to Nov. 21. The registration deadline is Sept. 22.
An early childhood music class will also be offered from Sept. 22 to Nov. 28 for 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds. The class, Music, Movement and More, is an Orff-Schulwerk-based program that uses musical instruments specially designed for young children. The class meets for 30 minutes twice a week in an eight-week session. Students must have been at least 4 before July 1, 1995. Registration deadline is Sept. 22.
A new class, Fiesta de Musica, is another Orff-Schulwerk-based performing group designed for any grade-school student who enjoys music. The class will teach students to sing songs, dance dances and play games of children around the world. It will meet for one hour each week, and at least one off-campus public performance will be scheduled. Registration deadline is Aug. 18.
Fee information is available by calling Fulgham at 651-2378. Partial scholarships are available to a limited number of students who are unable to afford full fees. Some financial information will be required. To apply contact the academy office at 651-2378.
