The Jackson Municipal Band will hold a special joint concert August 1, with the Southern Netherlands Young People's Orchestra.
This group of 75 young Dutch musicians is touring the United States this summer. A Dutch brass orchestra is very different from the American wind bands because the only woodwinds in the organization are saxophones. The band has no flutes or clarinets. This produces a very unique and powerful sound. The group can best be described as a brass band with saxophones and an extended percussion section.
The Jackson Municipal Band will be playing the first half of the concert, which begins at 2 p.m. at the band shell (the JHS gymnasium, in case of rain) and the guests the second half.
"We are very grateful to the Southeast Missouri Arts Council for sponsoring this group in our area and giving the citizens of Jackson and the surrounding communities an opportunity to help provide these young people with some lasting memories of our area," said Nick Leist. "Let's give them a real Jackson area welcome."
The Municipal band will also hold its regular weekly concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, at the band shell. Special guests will be Mike Dumey and Robyn Hosp. Dumey is a JHS graduate, who has taught music at Schultz School in Cape Girardeau for several years. Hosp, also a JHS graduate, has been singing professionally for 15 years.
The band's portion of Thursday's concert will include "Battle of Jericho," selections from "Porgy and Bess," Sousa's "Solid Men to the Front," and more.
Spectators should bring lawn chairs to both concerts. The entrance to the shell parking lot of off Route D.
