About 2,000 regional teachers are expected for the annual Southeast Missouri District Teachers Association meeting March 21 at the Show Me Center.

The number of attendees will be down considerably from past years because fewer schools close for the event.

Sheryl Smith, district representative of the Missouri School Teachers Association, said less than half of the member schools will dismiss because they are making up snow days.

A number of special awards will be given during the meeting. Southeast Missouri State University assistant professor Dr. Robert Herring, retired Cape Girardeau math teacher Shelby Shell, and Sikeston and Dexter superintendents Dr. Robert Buchanan and Dr. Jerry Louis Waddle, respectively, will be honored for meritorious service. Alfrieda Richards and JoAnn Hahs will be recognized as outstanding Community Teachers Association leaders of the year.

Astronaut and Jackson High School graduate Linda Godwin will be the guest speaker.
