MSSU faculty OKs expanding discrimination coverage
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) -- The faculty senate at Missouri Southern State University is supporting a proposal to add gays and lesbians to the school's anti-discrimination policies. JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) -- The faculty senate at Missouri Southern State University is supporting a proposal to add gays and lesbians to the school's anti-discrimination policies.
Faculty senate President Roger Chelf says the policy approved Monday would recommend adding protections for sexual orientation to the faculty handbook. It also would ask administrators to add "sexual orientation" to the university's equal opportunity employment statement.
The Joplin Globe reports that the proposal does not include the university's anti-harassment policy.

Monday's vote came after a member of the university's Board of Governors, David Ansley, used an anti-gay slur during a Feb. 20 board retreat. His comments prompted a student protest, and Ansley resigned.
