The Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA) awarded scholarships recently to three Southeast Missouri State University accounting majors at its annual Student Night.

The students are Mary Belken of Farmington, Darla Nitsch of Jackson and Daniel Landewee of Scott City. Each received a $750 scholarship to help cover the cost of tuition and fees.

The students were chosen by the Accounting Careers Committee of the Southeast Chapter of MSCPA based on financial need and scholarship.

Gary Johnson, an assistant professor of accounting and finance and a member of the local chapter's Accounting Careers Committee, said, "The scholarships are to recognize the significant role of education in the accounting profession.

"By giving the assistance to those people who have a need and who have demonstrated that they are academically talented, the practicing community is helping to assure that the pool of talented accountants is maintained," he said.

The chapter also recognized the efforts of several others at the event held at the Drury Lodge.

Deborah Beard, chairperson of Southeast's accounting and finance department, presented plaques of appreciation to Larry Welker, president of the Southeast chapter, and Harry Otto, MSCPA president.

To help celebrate the event, the chapter also invited to the banquet all former recipients of scholarships given by the chapter and the MSCPA Educational Foundation.

Since 1972, the foundation has awarded $15,000 in scholarships to Southeast students. Since 1986, the local chapter has awarded nearly $10,000 in scholarships to Southeast students, Johnson said.
