SCOTT CITY -- Brenda Moyers has taken a special interest in the affairs of her community for many of the 25 years she has lived in Scott City.
"I first got involved in the Parents-Teachers Association when my kids were in school," Moyers said. "It just grew from there."
Moyers was also one of the founding members of the Scott City Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Scott City Women's Club, and most recently served as a Ward 1 representative on the Scott City Council.
Moyers did not file for re-election. Now, she's had a change of heart and is launching a write-in campaign.
"I am going to nursing school full time and I thought that I just wouldn't have the time to devote to the council," she said.
"But the council members have worked so well together over this past year that I decided I would make time for the city," she said.
Since no one has filed for Moyers' seat, the person who gets the most write-in votes will win the election April 6.
Moyers said that she was disappointed to see that no one in her ward filed for the seat. "I guess I want everyone to take as much interest in the community as I have," she said.
There are several things Moyers said she would like to see completed if re-elected.
"I want to see Nash Road open to the Port Authority," she said. "I'd also like to see someone from Scott City elected to the Port Authority board."
Moyers also hopes that a second street leading out of Scott City will soon be built.
"It would be in the best interest for safety and convenience," she said. Currently, Main Street is the only through street that runs east-west in Scott City.
The councilwoman is also anxious about what could come out of the Cape Girardeau Area Industrial Recruitment Association. Scott City will donate $5,000 a year for the next three years to the association for the solicitation of the area to factories and large businesses.
"Scott City is the ideal location for an industrial center," Moyers said. "We've got the railroads, the water, the Port Authority and the airport right outside our front door."
During her term on the council, Moyers was chairman of the police affairs committee and has served on the finance and public works committees.
"I want to be a part of the future growth of this city," Moyers said. "I would be honored to serve the citizens of our ward for another term."
