Associated Press WriterALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- Accused Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui has asked that an American lawyer be allowed to help in his defense, court documents released Monday show.
Moussaoui, who earlier this month won permission from U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema to act as his own lawyer, asked the court to allow Charles Freeman to help him question a government witness and participate Tuesday in his second arraignment on the Sept. 11 charges.
Moussaoui's request was disclosed in papers filed by the government opposing the request. Prosecutors said Moussaoui has filed two motions "which were apparently written with the assistance of Mr. Freeman."
Prosecutors argued that Freeman, who was identified in the court papers only as a lawyer from Texas, has not formally entered the case and should not be permitted to meet with Moussaoui until he does.
