MOUND CITY, Ill. Frederic M. Winkler, the dean of Southern Illinois mayors, lost his chance at an eighth term Tuesday. Winkler, who has been mayor at Mound City 28 years, lost to challenger Sam Johnson in unofficial returns during Tuesday's election in this small Pulaski County town. Johnson receives 152 votes to Winkler's 134.

The only alderman race at Mound City was in Ward 1. Norman G. Koen received 71 votes and Michael Dover earned 63. Incumbents Harry C. Dover and Cleveland Forbes had no opposition. Dover collected 41 votes in Ward 2 and Forbes had 83 in Ward 3. City Clerk Louise Calvin and treasurer Shirley Koen will each return to their respective positions, with no opposition. Calvin had 245 votes and Koen, 188.

There was one aldermanic post race at Mounds.

Incumbent David Laird defeated Bill Hearst in Ward 1, 78 to 36. Unopposed candidate Noel Robertson received 42 votes in Ward 2, and Tim Bellamy, unopposed, received 109 votes in Ward 3.

Marguerite Ward, who has served as a city official at Mounds 12 years, nine of them as mayor, was a winner Tuesday, defeating challenger Raymond Butler, 197 to 154.

Also unopposed were city treasurer Ruth McClellan, who received 243 votes, and secretary Sue Gulley with 236 votes.
