MOST GOVERNMENT OFFICES CLOSE FRIDAY FOR HOLIDAY

Taxpayers and motorists whose vehicle or operator's license expire in December are reminded that most state license fee offices and county collector's offices will be closed all day Friday, New Year's Eve.

The deadline to pay 1993 real-estate and personal property taxes without penalties is midnight Friday.

The Cape Girardeau license fee office will close at 4 p.m. today and be closed Friday and Saturday. The Jackson license fee office will close at 4:30 p.m. today and remain closed Friday and Saturday. The Chaffee license fee office will be open Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Saturday.

Driver's and commercial driver's licenses examinations and skill testing will be given today as scheduled at the Cape Girardeau Naval Reserve Center. There will be no testing Friday. Testing will resume Monday at the Jackson National Guard Armory.

All federal, state, county and municipal offices will be closed Friday and Saturday with the following exceptions:

-- The Cape Girardeau County collector's offices in Cape Girardeau and Jackson will be open until 2 p.m. Friday for payment of 1993 county and Cape Girardeau city taxes.

-- Jackson city offices will be closed Friday but the city collector's office will remain open until 2 p.m. for payment of 1993 taxes.

-- Chaffee city offices, including the collector's office, will be open Friday until 5 p.m. but will be closed Monday. The city council meeting on Monday will be held as scheduled.

All Scott City city hall offices, including that of collector, will be closed Friday. City offices, including city collector, in Scott City will close for the year at 5 p.m. today.

All Cape Girardeau city offices will be closed Friday.

The Friday solid-waste pickup routes in Jackson will be consolidated with Monday's routes. The Jackson landfill will close today at 3 p.m. and reopen at 9 a.m. Monday.

In Scott City, Friday's route will be consolidated with Tuesday's routes. Residents may double their bag limit on Tuesday.

Banks and financial institutions will be open Friday; however, it is advised to call first to see if there are early closing hours on Friday. All banks will be closed Saturday.

The Cape Girardeau Post office will be open Friday and closed Saturday. There will be no box mail or home delivery on Saturday; however, special delivery and express mail will be delivered over the weekend.

The last collection of mail from city drop boxes will be at 5 p.m. Friday. The next collection of box mail will be on Sunday at 5 p.m.

All area schools have been dismissed for the Christmas-New Year's holiday break. Classes resume Monday.

Offices at Southeast Missouri State University are closed this week and will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday. Spring semester classes will begin at 8 a.m. Jan. 10.
