MORLEY - Morley native Hugh McDonough has received the 1991 Multiple Sclerosis National Achievement Award.
McDonough, a college professor who moved to California in 1960, was presented with the award by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Board of Directors in June in New York.
The annual award is given to someone with multiple sclerosis who exemplifies what people with the disease can do and accomplish. Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease where the protective coating over nerve fibers and the brain become damaged.
McDonough was diagnosed with the disease in 1979 while a state hospital field investigator in California.
He is a 1957 graduate of Morley High School who attended Southeast Missouri State University for two years. McDonough then moved to California, where he eventually earned a doctorate in public administration from the University of Southern California.
McDonough has taught courses, including disability administration, at California State Polytechnical University at Pomona, Calif.
McDough has two grown children.
