JACKSON, Mo. -- The national tragedies of Sept. 11 forced the Jackson Chamber of Commerce to postpone its annual picnic planned the same afternoon. In welcoming guests to the rescheduled picnic Tuesday, chamber Executive Director Ken Parrett said "It's time to get on with our lives."

More than 100 people came to Jackson City Park to enjoy bratwurst, burgers, potato salad and sodas provided by sponsor JCS/Tel-Link. The Cape Girardeau County Swingers, a square dancing organization, provided entertainment and demonstrations.

Parrett presented a plaque to John Thompson, representing the Bank of Missouri, which has become the organization's first silver-level sponsor. Sponsorship at the silver level requires a donation of $1,500.

The chamber also acknowledged receipt of a donation of $500 from Southwestern Bell to pay for a Community Development Committee survey gauging the priorities of Jackson residents.

Peggy Childers of Magna-Tel Inc. came to the picnic to sell "United We Stand" and American flag magnetic signs that can be attached to vehicles. Business was good.

All proceeds from sale of the signs will go to the American Red Cross. Childers said nearly $50,000 in signs have been sold in just over a week.
