JACKSON, Mo. -- A second mental evaluation of a 23-year-old man accused of kidnapping and sexually abusing two girls was requested by his defense attorney Wednesday.

Samuel J. Farrow Jr. of Jackson will undergo mental examinations by a Kansas City psychiatrist, with a report of results due before Associate Circuit Judge Michael Bullerdieck by May 16.

Farrow is charged with 16 felony crimes involving abductions of a 4-year-old girl and a 7-year-old girl in November and July last year. He is alleged to have kidnapped both girls, who are not related, from the same mobile home in Scott City, Mo. The mobile home had been rented by two different families.

Although results of Farrow's initial mental evaluation by the state was not announced, defense attorney Al Lowes suggested that he was looking for a different outcome from a private psychiatrist.

"We went with him because we wanted the best in the business," Lowes said.

Farrow completed a mental evaluation through the Missouri Department of Mental Health by request of Cape Girardeau County prosecutor Morley Swingle. The purpose of the examination was to determine whether Farrow can assist in his own defense in court and if he was mentally fit at the time of the crimes.

All expenses for a second mental examination of Farrow would be paid privately.

Farrow, who is being held at the Mississippi County Jail, will either be transported to Kansas City for examinations or the psychiatrist will travel here.
