A Jackson man charged March 1 with breaking into a church in Cape Girardeau and damaging a Commerce Bank automated teller machine has been connected to burglaries at four Jackson businesses.

Chance G. Breese, 19, already accused of breaking into First General Baptist Church and stealing keys, was charged Monday with second-degree burglary, a felony and misdemeanor theft for allegedly breaking into Jackson Laundry Mat at 119 S. Hope St.

The coin laundry break-in, reported to the Jackson Police Department on Feb. 17, occurred during the same time as several other burglaries in Jackson, which Breese previously confessed to, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Breese admitted to using a pocketknife to break into the office of the coin laundry and took $50 in quarters. Breese told Barnes he also stole a can of soda and a pair of socks.

Breese was charged last week for allegedly breaking into and stealing money from a Jackson barber shop at 214 W. Main St.

and for burglarizing Jackson Muffler and Curious Kids Daycare.

During an interview March 1, while Breese was in the custody of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department, he confessed to burglarizing the barbershop and also to stealing cash and breaking into Jackson Muffler at 123 S. Hope St., according to the probable-cause statement.

Jackson Muffler was reported broken into on Feb. 11. In addition, Breese admitted to breaking into a camper parked at 529 W. Main St.

Breese is charged with second-degree burglary and misdemeanor theft for stealing about $200 in cash and allegedly breaking into the Jackson day care center.

The burglary at Curious Kids Daycare was reported to police after Donna Illers, the owner, smelled marijuana and assumed that someone was in the business or had recently been in the business.

Officers who responded to the day care also smelled marijuana and found two pillows and a large backpack which Illers reported weren't there the day before. A Velcro patch with the name Breese on it was attached to the backpack, according to a probable-cause affidavita sheriff's office detective. Officers found a roll of duct tape, rope and a black ski mask inside the bag.

Officers left the day care but were called back when business owners noticed a Facebook page was left open on the company's computer. In a message which hadn't been sent, deputies saw Breese's name as the sender.

In a March 1 interview with investigators, Breese admitted to entering the day care through an unlocked porch area where he used the company's computer and fell asleep watching television.

During that interview, Breese denied stealing $200 in cash, but in a second round of questioning confessed to stealing three envelopes containing cash from a desk in the downstairs portion of the day care.

According to Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle, Breese is currently on probation from Associate Circuit Court Judge Gary A. Kamp on a misdemeanor case. Breese pleaded guilty and received a suspended imposition of sentence on Aug. 13 to domestic assault, animal abuse, drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and property damage.

Breese will appear before Kamp on the church burglary charges April 1 for a preliminary hearing and again on April 15 on the charges filed Feb. 16 and 17. He'll appear before Kamp on March 25 for his arraignment on the newest charges.
