A monument commemorating the accomplishments of Cape Girardeau woman Amy Kimmel will be unveiled at 2 p.m. today at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.
Members of the Cape Girardeau Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as well as local historian Frank Nickell, are organizing the rededication of the monument, which originally was housed downtown in the park near Old St. Vincent's Church near a freshly planted hawthorn tree before later being moved to a spot at Southeast Missouri State University. It was moved again to a parking lot at Southeast's security building, but now will reside at the public library.
Kimmel, a member of the Cape Girardeau Daughters of the American Revolution, also is credited with having started the Wednesday Club in Cape, which dissolved in 2003.
Nickell will give a keynote address explaining the importance of Kimmel's civic work before her death in 1936 and the process to give her memorial a permanent home.
The event will begin at 2 p.m. today at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark Ave.
