Keith Monia has been charged with 15 felonies in two Southeast Missouri counties stemming from an investigation into his financial dealings. He is accused of taking more than $560,000 from nine people -- two couples and five individuals -- since early September 2007. Here is a synopsis of the charges against him:
Charge: Class A financial exploitation of the elderly
Date: Sept. 13, 2007
Amount: $80,000
Claim: Monia promised to invest $80,000 in an annuity for a client but never made the investments. A civil suit against Monia also is pending in connection with the case.
Charge: Class A financial exploitation of the elderly
Date: June 17, 2008
Amount: $50,000
Claim: Monia promised to invest $50,000 in an annuity for a client but never made the investments.
Charges: Three counts of Class B financial exploitation of the elderly
Dates: April 23, 2010; May 14, 2010; Jan. 24, 2013
Amount: $70,000
Claim: Over a period of nearly three years, Monia promised to make investments of $30,000, $20,000 and $20,000 in annuities for a client but never invested the money.
Charge: Class B stealing by deceit
Date: June 20, 2011
Amount: $100,000
Claim: Monia promised to invest $100,000 in an annuity for a client but never made the investment.
Charges: Class B financial exploitation of the elderly and class C forgery
Date: March 7, 2013
Amount: $7,500
Claim: Monia promised to use $20,000 of a client's money to help him purchase a modular home but instead applied only $12,500 toward the purchase and altered a purchase agreement with the seller of the home to make the buyer believe he had paid the entire $20,000.
Charges: Two counts of class A financial exploitation of the elderly and two counts of class C forgery
Dates: Sept. 10, 2010; June 17, 2011
Amount: $220,000
Claim: Over a period of about nine months, Monia promised to make investments of $120,000 and $100,000 in annuities for a couple but never invested the money.
Charges: Three counts of class B financial exploitation of the elderly
Dates: July 8, 2011; Sept. 12, 2011; Nov. 15, 2012
Amount: $40,000
Claim: Over a period of about 16 months, Monia promised to make investments of $10,000, $10,000 and $20,000 in annuities for a couple but never invested the money.
