The Missouri Department of Transportation is preparing for an inspection of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge on Highway 74 in Cape Girardeau. The inspection will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily Monday through March 18. MoDOT contractor Modjeski and Masters will perform the work, including an in-depth inspection of the structure's features, according to a news release by MoDOT. The inspection will require lane and shoulder closures, but only one lane and shoulder will be closed in either direction, minimizing the effect on traffic. In addition to inspecting the underside of the span, the contractor will examine the bridge's cable system. Inspectors will rappel from the towers down the stay cables. Additionally, the contractor will survey miscellaneous items from the deck level.
All work is weather permitting. Work zones will be marked with signs. Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling near the area. For more information about the project, contact MoDOT's Customer Service Center at 888-275-6636, or visit modot.org/southeast.
