The Missouri Department of Transportation will allow heavier-than-normal loads of sand and gravel to be transported on selected roadways this week during repair of levees in Southeast Missouri.
According to a release from MoDOT, private and for-hire motor carriers may carry up to 10 percent more than their licensed weight. Heavier loads are not allowed, however, to use interstates or national defense highway routes. Overweight permits are not required. All other traffic and motor carrier regulations that normally apply remain in place.
The waiver went into effect at noon Saturday and will expire at noon Friday. Transportation may only occur within state lines.
During a bridge crossing, drivers must not exceed 30 mph and must center the truck between two lanes of a bridge. The driver must also yield to oncoming traffic.
