An early morning fire caused moderate fire and smoke damage at a Cape Girardeau apartment building.

The fire broke out shortly after 5 a.m. at 417 Marroseann Drive, according to a Cape Girardeau Fire Department news release. The fire department reported the blaze broke out on the third floor in an apartment kitchen. Five trucks responded to the fire, which was under control in less than 10 minutes.

Two people inside the apartment were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and were able to get out safely, according to the news release. No injuries were reported.
