Delta firefighters with the help of Whitewater Fire Protection District squelched a mobile home fire on County Road 251 about three miles outside of Delta Thursday morning. Delta Fire Protection District assistant chief Kevin Gramlisch said he was paged just before 8 a.m. from 147 County Road 251 with a report of the fire.

"By the time we got there it was 50 to 75 percent on fire," he said. "The flames were coming out of all the windows in the front of the home."

The two fire districts extinguished the flames in about 20 minutes and stayed on the scene for about two hours, he said.

Gramlisch said a woman and her son lived in the two-bedroom unit and that the son was in day care when the fire occurred.

"She just happened to wake up and the kitchen was on fire," he said. "She called 911 and tried to beat it out herself."

She sustained some burns from her efforts, he said, and was treated on the scene but did not go to the hospital for treatment at that time.

Gramlisch said the trailer was a "total loss" and that the woman and her son went to stay with relatives. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and no damage estimate was available Thursday.

"Mutual aid from the other department helped a lot," Gramlisch said. The house did not have smoke detectors, he said.
