More than 150 volunteers who served during 2006, contributing more than 21,000 hours at the Cape Girardeau Missouri Veterans Home, were recognized at the annual volunteer appreciation night recently.
Total volunteer hours served at the state operated facility since its opening in 1990 is 378,073, as of December.
Criteria for selection of the four volunteers of the year, Clinton Gerler, Charles P. Hutson, Johnny Schlener and John Powers, included outstanding service on a long and continuous basis, a significant number of hours, performance of essential duties and good representation of the home.
Volunteers trained in the International Stephen Ministry visitation program made more than 1,000 personal visits. Other assistance to residents included delivering ice, operating the canteen, delivering mail, helping with bingo sessions or activities, service on the Golf Tournament Committee or Foundation Board.
Volunteers are awarded a pin and 100-hour bar for each 100-hour milestone of volunteer service.
Two volunteers, the late Euil Trickey and Barbara Yallaly, exceeded the 10,000-hour milestone.
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Department of Missouri home representative since 1999, Jewell Lincecum donated 4,671 hours; Dorothy Points, home representative of the Missouri State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, donated 428 hours.

Six resident volunteers are part of the volunteer corps. They serve as officers on the resident council helping set up activities, assisting with spiritual programs, planting and in other ways. They are Hugh LeDure, Bill Walker, Charles Clippard, Walter Vinyard, Lillian Burgfeld and Betty Williams.
