JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri House Speaker Steven Tilley is questioning whether the secretary of state is correctly verifying that candidates for public office qualify for the ballot.
The Republican speaker, of Perryville, released a letter this week asking how Secretary of State Robin Carnahan verifies a candidate's tax history. A state law bars candidates who owe back taxes from appearing on the ballot.
The Kansas City Star reports Tilley's question stems from November's re-election of House Democrat Leonard "Jonas" Hughes IV, of Kansas City, who owed property taxes from 2005. He has now paid the taxes.
In a statement Thursday, Carnahan said her office followed existing state law precisely. Carnahan's office and the Department of Revenue have said they're responsible for checking candidates' tax histories only if they receive a formal complaint.
