Mo. school district starts random drug testing
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Maryville school officials say about 80 percent of the district's 700 students will be subject to random drug testing when classes resume later this month. MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Maryville school officials say about 80 percent of the district's 700 students will be subject to random drug testing when classes resume later this month.
The school board in northwest Missouri approved a drug-testing policy in May that will randomly test students in seventh through 12th grades who participate in extracurricular activities.
The St. Joseph News-Press reported a Springfield-based company will conduct testing, which assistant school superintendent Steve Klotz said will cost the district $5,000 to $7,000 a year.

A first positive test benches the student from extracurricular activities for 30 days, with a second positive test bringing a 90-day suspension.
Klotz estimates about 25 percent of the state's school districts already do random drug screenings.
