Mo. police apologize for killing family pet

RAYMORE, Mo. (AP) -- Raymore police have apologized to a family whose 19-year-old cat was taken into a field by an officer and shot to death on Labor Day.

Kelly Wesner and her family were looking for their pet around the same time it was being shot and discarded in a city trash bin.

Wesner told The Kansas City Star that the cat she had owned for 18 years had gotten out of the house on Monday and went into a neighbor's garage. The neighbor sprayed it with a garden hose to get it to leave.

Police received a report of a large, vicious, feral cat that had scratched a child and may be diseased.

An officer who had captured Tobey took the animal to a remote area and "put him down." The officer shot Tobey twice in the head, then put the body into a grocery bag for disposal.
