MEXICO, Mo. -- A northeast Missouri man has been convicted of killing his wife and stuffing her body in a septic tank on their farm 20 years ago.

KXEO-AM reports that an Audrain County jury Thursday found Douglas Howery guilty of first-degree murder. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 4.

Betty Anne Howery was 44 years old when she disappeared in February 1992 from the couple's rural home near the Pike County town of Annada.

Douglas Howery moved to the Springfield, Mo., area of southwest Missouri after the crime. That's where he was arrested in 2009 after a septic tank being replaced at his former farm was found to contain his wife's remains.

The trial was held in Audrain County on a change of venue from Pike County.
